Bobinger pitches Catholic to first State Tournament final

By Derek Taylor, Charleston Daily Mail, W.Va.

June 3--CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Moments after Charleston Catholic broke its postgame huddle following an 8-0 win over Moorefield on Thursday night, the past, present and potential future of the Irish baseball program was embodied in a short exchange between parent and player.

A parent of one of the Catholic players wished to take a team photo using the Appalachian Power Park scoreboard as a backdrop. The Irish, who advanced to their first Class A State Tournament championship game by way of Thursday's win, immediately began to assemble.

Then reality struck senior pitcher Alex Bobinger.

"Wait, no. We've got one more game to win before we start taking pictures," Bobinger said to his team after pitching six innings and giving up three hits to improve to 10-3.

His teammates immediately rose and made their way to the dugout, defiantly declining the photo op.

Catholic (27-9) will meet Wheeling Central (17-6-1) at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Class A championship game, again at Appalachian Power Park.

The Irish have never won a baseball championship, although their 2011 appearance in the State Tournament is their sixth in the last 10 years. In fact, they were 0-5 in State Tournament play before Thursday's victory.

Bobinger, who also struck out four, issued four walks and went 2-for-4, said that while a day off today will help the Irish rest, their ability to refocus and face Central should not be an issue.

"Honestly, I already think we're ready for Saturday," Bobinger said. "We're confident that we won and we broke the little school drought that we had, but we're already focused and we're ready for Saturday."

Senior center fielder Bo McKown said Wednesday that his team's goal was to establish an early lead and allow less experienced players to settle into the flow of the game and perform to their potential at crunch time.

He couldn't have scripted it better.

The Irish touched Moorefield (20-7) starter Josh Thorne (7-2) for two runs in the bottom of the first.

A half-inning later, senior catcher Brody Prudnick began a string of sterling defensive plays by Catholic when, with two outs and Moorefield runners on first and second, he chased down a pop foul by Yellow Jacket No. 9 hitter Zack Laughlin.
