Greenback tornado victims grateful for generosity

Instead of thinking of material possessions lost, victims are instead thankful for the neighbors and strangers who have helped them. They are thankful for the items they were able to save. They are thankful to be alive.

“We just want to thank the Lord that no one in this community was seriously hurt. It was a miracle,” said Aileen Anderson. She and her husband Bobby Anderson lost his mother’s house and a family barn in the storm. Luckily, their residence was not damaged.

Grace Coada was also lucky or as she says, “blessed.” Her home was not spared but her life was. She was inside the house on Highway 411 when the tornado moved it 36 feet off its foundation. In fact, she left the front bedroom just seconds before the walls fell under the pressure of the high winds.

That night, Coada’s cat, Bubba, was outside trying to get in. Coada was in bed watching television. She got up and let the cat in. She walked back to the bedroom, went in the bedroom door but for some reason walked back out. She was in the hallway when it happened.

“All I was thinking was, ‘God, I ain’t never gonna see my kids no more,’” she said. “I didn’t even feel the house moving ‘cause it was busy knocking me down the hall.”

When the winds died down, broken glass was everywhere. Coada remembers scooting down the hall on a rug to find a candle. Very quickly a policeman was kicking in her front door.

When the door flew open, Bubba the cat flew out. Last week, Coada moved back into her U.S. Highway 411 home.

Her landlords, John and Ruth Dixon, worked with their insurance company to have the home completely rebuilt just like it was before the tornado. Reconstruction on the home started less than one week after the devastation and the house was completely rebuilt in just five weeks.

Like many in Greenback, the Dixons wasted nothing, saving everything that could be reused. They even hired a man to remove nails from the wood.

Not everything could be reused, however, some things were just gone. “The roof off the porch and living room left together. I don’t know where they went to,” said John Dixon.

After everything was rebuilt and the workers were gone, Bubba came back. He is thinner and has a few scars but he’s alive and that’s what counts.

Now when the sky turns dark, Coada admits she and Bubba are a little jumpy. They were at the house when the most recent hailstorm came through.
