Lots of Car Crime in Montclair

On 6/16/11 at approximately 1:40 PM, police responded to Bellevue Avenue in Upper Montclair on a report of vandalism to a motor vehicle. The victim, a Nutley resident, told police that he observed an open parking spot on Bellevue Avenue and proceeded to park his vehicle in front of the Tinga Taqueria restaurant. As he exited the vehicle, he was approached by a black male who had been operating a black vehicle. This male told the Nutley resident that he had pulled past the open space and was preparing to parallel park in the space that the Nutley resident had parked. The Nutley resident told the male that he was just picking up an item in Cold Stone Creamery and that he would move the vehicle in a few minutes. When the victim returned to his vehicle, he discovered that the rear driver’s side tire to his vehicle had been punctured and was now flat. On 6/16/11 at approximately 3:45 PM, police responded to the A&P Supermarket on Valley Road in Upper Montclair on a report of someone attempting to break into a motor vehicle. The victim told police that she parked her vehicle, a Honda Accord, on the north side of the store’s lot on that date at approximately 3:15 PM. When she returned to the vehicle approximately fifteen minutes later, she discovered that the driver’s side door handle to the Honda had been damaged. The victim reports that no items were taken from the vehicle and it did not appear that the suspect gained entry to the Honda. There are no suspects at this time. On 6/16/11 at approximately 10:20 PM, police were patrolling the area of New Street when they received a complaint of a large group creating a disturbance. Upon arrival, police observed a group walking east on Bloomfield Avenue. Police observed that one of the individuals, had placed a container of beer on the ground. The 18 from Montclair, was issued a summons for underage possession of an alcoholic beverage.

Theft from a Motor Vehicle On 6/17/11 at approximately 8:05 AM, police responded to the Lloyd Road Parking Lot on Lloyd Road on a report of a theft from a motor vehicle. The victim told police that she parked her Dodge Durango in the lot the previous night at approximately 10:30 PM. When she returned to the vehicle on the 17th at approximately 7:50 AM, she discovered that the vehicle’s driver’s side door handle had been damaged and various belongings were scattered about the Durango’s front seat area.

The victim reported that a Garmin GPS, valued at $250, had been stolen from the vehicle. In addition, the ignition to the Durango had been tampered with and was damaged. It is believed that a screwdriver was utilized to gain entry to the vehicle and cause the damage to the ignition. The damage to the ignition appears consistent with an attempted theft of the motor vehicle. There are no suspects at this time. On 6/17/11 at approximately 8:50 AM, police responded to South Mountain Avenue on a report of a theft from a motor vehicle. The caller told police that a Jeep Cherokee had been parked in the property’s driveway the previous night at approximately 9:00 PM. At approximately 8:30 AM on the 17th, the caller noticed that the vehicle’s driver’s side door was wide open and went to investigate. He then discovered that the rear passenger’s side window to the Cherokee had been broken out. The caller reports that an EMT medical bag, containing first aid supplies and valued at $1,000, had been stolen from the vehicle. There are no suspects at this time. On 6/17/11 at approximately 9:10 AM, police were approached by a male who stated that someone had entered his motor vehicle on Crestview Court. The victim told police that he parked his vehicle, a Hyundai Sonata, the previous night at approximately 8:00 PM. When he returned to the vehicle on the 17th at approximately 8:40 AM, he discovered the owner’s manual to the vehicle on the ground and realized that someone had gone through the vehicle. The vehicle had been left unlocked prior to the incident. There are no suspects at this time. On 6/17/11 at approximately 9:20 AM, police responded to South Mountain Avenue on a report of vandalism to a motor vehicle. The victim told police that she parked her Lexus RX3 in her driveway the previous night at approximately 11:00 PM. When she returned to the vehicle on the morning of the 17th, she discovered that the driver’s side door lock appeared to have been punched out. It does not appear that the actor gained entry to the vehicle. There are no suspects at this time. On 6/17/11 at approximately 8:35 PM, police responded to a single-family residence on Brunswick Road on a report of a burglary that had occurred. Upon arrival, police spoke to the caller, who stated that someone had entered the residence sometime between 2:00 AM and 7:00 PM on that date. The victim reports that an Apple Mac Book Pro 13” laptop computer valued at $1,200, an Apple iPad valued at $800, a Canon digital camera valued at $1,200, a Blackberry Storm # 2 cell phone, a wallet, brown Dooney and Burke women’s purse valued at $300, various identification cards, and $40 in cash had been stolen from the first floor of the residence. The rear door to the residence had been left unlocked prior to the incident and police did not locate any other signs of forced entry to the house. There are no suspects at this time. On 6/18/11 at approximately 5:45 AM, police responded to South Mountain Terrace on a report of a motor vehicle theft in progress. Upon arrival, police learned that the suspects had already fled the scene. Police were directed to an Audi A6 parked in a residential driveway. The windows to the vehicle had been opened and the power to the vehicle was on. The ignition to the vehicle had been popped and the glove compartment had been emptied of its contents. Police located a garage door opener in the vehicle.
