I just read an article about how taking care of young children alone is more stressful than having a job.
I agree.
I’ve had many jobs. I’ve worked on trading floors answering phones, schlepped garbage on a film set for fourteen hours a day, and taught elementary school, to name a few. All three of the above jobs were stressful.
At the end of a day working on Wall Street. I cried because people were so nasty and I was so miserable, but I could go home and watch crappy TV and forget about it until the next day.
After a long day on the film set, my body hurt, I smelled disgusting, and I had to wake up in 8 hours to do it all over again.
Teaching was definitely the most difficult. It was incredibly hard. This is not to say that occasionally, I wouldn’t love a day off. But unfortunately, I never get one. I’m lucky to get an hour off, really.
When I became a mother, I was in shock at how ‘in demand’ I was. I’m still in shock, actually. The demands just keep coming– from the moment I wake up until the moment everyone else goes to sleep! I can’t even walk from my bed to the bathroom in the morning without having to do something for someone else first, or at least tell them to wait until I’ve gone to the bathroom before I do it.
Perhaps this is why I end up staying awake later than I should, savoring the quiet moment alone, even if I’m working for most of the time. Right now, I can hear waves hitting the shoreline on the lake, and I don’t hear “Mommy can I have some ___________” in the background.
Anyone else feel these stresses? What do you do about it?
By the way, this is in no way meant to slight working-out-of-the-home moms… Just commenting on this article I read. I’m a working mom, too. Would love to hear from all moms on this issue.
