Central Pa. Krunch 16U squad takes third at PONY Nationals

The Central PA Krunch 16U fast-pitch softball team recently took third place at the PONY Nationals in Cary, N.C. Members of the team include Amber Bingaman (Upper Dauphin), Tessa Campbell (Newport), Darian Holley (Newport), Stephanie Sweat (Pottsville), Amanda Kemmerling (Pine Grove), Peyton Klembara (Lourdes Regional), Kelcie Crabb (Mifflinburg), Cheyenne Farrance (Boiling Springs), Brooke Sullivan (Big Spring), Brittany Wagner (Big Spring) and Kora Zeigler (Susquenita).

The Central Pennsylvania Krunch 16U softball team ended its run at a national championship by claiming third place in the 2011 Pony Nationals.

The team posted a 9-3 record in the tournament, and its three losses were by a total of four runs.

The journey started when the Krunch headed south to represent Central Pa. at the nationals in Cary, NC.

By going 2-1 in pool play, the Krunch secured the two seed in its pool as bracket play began last Tuesday.

Game one of bracket play brought an international match-up, against the Quebec Rebelles. In a tight pitchers duel, the Krunch came though in the bottom of the seventh inning with a huge 1-0 victory.

Game two of bracket play, on Wednesday, brought the Krunch its first loss, to the CT Bombers, by a score of 4-3.

With their backs against the wall, the Krunch players knew they would need to rattle off five consecutive wins to make the Elite 8 Championship round on Friday.

That run began Wednesday evening with a win over Team TFS from North Carolina. Thursday brought four games between 9:40 a.m. and 9:20 p.m. as temperatures soared over the 100-degree mark and the propsect of elimination lurked in every game.

With four straight wins - over the Quebec Rebelles (rematch), PA Intensity, Diamond Dusters from New York and the CT Bombers in a huge rematch to avenge its one bracket loss - the Krunch walked off the field at 11 p.m. victorious. The Krunch had qualified for the Elite 8 Championship round.

On Friday morning. playing the team's 11th game of the tournament, the Krunch took on CT Shock Gold and came out ahead, 6-5.

That accomplishment earned the team a spot in the Final Four. But the semifinals brought the NC Challengers, and that team eliminated the Krunch on its way to the championship.

Game 1 results:

Bethlehem Pates 7 – Lady Ice NY 4

Jade Zamadics pitches the Pates to a game 1 victory to start the day. Julia Sledz had a big triple and Natasha Miner homered for the Pates. Madison McClary caught a long shot to centerfield to end the game!

Game 2 results:

Bethlehem Pates 2 – PA Ball Hawks 13

The Pates record is 1-1 on the day as the faced a very good “A”  team from Pennsylvania.

Game 3 results:

Bethlehem Pates 6 - Central Pa Krunch 5

The Pates bounce back to up their record to 2-1 with Kyra Stanilious on the mound.

Game 4 results:

Bethlehem Pates 1 - LV Flames 9

Pates team finishes the day at 2-2. Great way to start out the spring season!
