Dam build enters critical stage
Construction of Canberra's $363 million Cotter Dam will begin another major stage this week when the first concrete of the 80m high wall is placed.Testing of the conveyer and the concrete mix is expected to begin today or tomorrow with the full-scale construction of the dam wall expected to begin next week.
Subject to weather and mechanical failures, construction of the wall will take about eight months with work continuing 24 hours a day.
Concrete for the wall will be prepared in a large batch plant, then transported by a seven-stage conveyer to the work site about 470m above sea level. This is more than 100m lower than most of Canberra.
The concrete will be moved around the site by 40-tonne, articulated dump trucks and will be spread by graders and rolled, similar to the method used to construct roads.
In cold weather, warmed water will be added to the concrete mix and a computer controlled system will maintain the correct temperature. In hot weather a plant will produce up to 400 tonnes of shaved ice an hour, also to maintain the correct temperature of the concrete. Work on the dam began in February last year and construction of the wall was expected to begin in June this year.
But a major geological fault required the removal of 12,000 cubic metres of rock and the subsequent 9m deep hole to be filled with concrete.
This work accounted for about $10million of the contingency budget.
Despite this and an $8 million cost caused by last year's above average rain, the project remains on budget. But Actew managing director Mark Sullivan concedes it is now critical.
He said yesterday concrete would be placed in 300mm layers.
This might increase to 400mm layers about half way up the wall.
Mr Sullivan said that after the wall had been completed, commissioning of the dam would take about three months.
