Adams named outstanding teacher

Cindy Adams was honored with The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) prestigious Region IV Teacher of the Year at the Regional Conference in Biloxi, Miss.  Region IV encompasses six states — Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas and Arkansas.  Adams will now compete for National ACTE Teacher of the Year in November 2011 at the National Conference in St. Louis, Mo. She is a 1989 graduate of Allen High School and attended East Central University earning a Bachelors degree in Business Education (1994) and a Masters degree in Secondary Education (2003). She is a National Board Certified Teacher and has been teaching for 16 years.  Adams began her teaching career at Pontotoc Technology Center before continuing to Davis High School and currently teaches at Southern Oklahoma Technology Center as instructor in the Medical Office Administration program. Adams was first nominated for the award by her school administration in the spring of 2010.  She won the honor of representing her professional division, Business Information Technology Education.  She advanced to state where she won the coveted honor for the state of Oklahoma in August 2010.  Cindy then represented Oklahoma at the Region IV Conference where she again took center stage as the Teacher of the Year. The Association for Career and Technical Education is the largest national education association dedicated to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for successful careers.  Membership is comprised of over 27,000 career and technical educators involved in planning and conducting career and technical education programs at the secondary, post-secondary and adult levels. ACTE developed the prestigious Teacher of the Year award to recognize teachers who are providing outstanding career and technical education programs for youth and/or adults. Recipients must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique, and novel programs that are serving to improve and promote career and technical education. Nominees must be full-time classroom or laboratory teachers in career and technical education programs and must be involved in ACTE at the regional and national levels. Amanda Neiger (Carter County Health Department), said that Adams, “has an exceptional understanding of career and technical education programs as demonstrated by her leadership in training, motivating, and inspiring students to become involved in local programs and projects.” Neiger also observed that one of this teacher’s exceptional skills is her “ability to engage students’ community partners for a common purpose.” Adams holds a master’s degree in education, is a National Board Certified master teacher, and teaches both at the secondary and post-secondary levels. High school students in her class can earn up to 45 hours of college credit while enrolled in the unique program. The program has been so successful that for the last five years there has been a waiting list for students to become one of the 30 students approved for enrollment. Adams spearheaded numerous community service projects which included collecting and distributing food baskets at Thanksgiving, purchasing Christmas gifts and necessities for a needy family, as well as participation in Toys for Tots, Special Olympics, and March of Dimes. An annual project for students in the program is assisting the local county health department with administering flu shots. In the last four years, 60 students donated over 250 hours to assist in the administering of 20,000 flu shots.
