Hendrix Students Spend Summer in China Learning Language and Culture
CONWAY, Ark. (June 9, 2011) – Twelve Hendrix College students are learning Chinese language and culture, thanks to an eight-week cooperative program sponsored by the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS), an academic consortium that includes Hendrix, and Heilongjiang University in China.
Hendrix students on the trip include:
Ben Nelson, a junior from Southlake, Texas
Christian Brooks, a junior from San Antonio, Texas
Jamie Zarate, a senior from Fulshear, Texas
Sara Yingling, a sophomore from Winslow, Ark.
Dianne Eppley, a senior from Rogers, Ark.
Richard Sakul, a senior from Norwalk, Calif.
Tyler White, a sophomore from Mountain Home, Ark.
Sarah Martin, a sophomore from Beebe, Ark.
John Balch, a junior from Louisville, Colo.
Laura Turvey, a senior from New Windsor, Md.
Harrison Maddox, a sophomore from Searcy, Ark.
Megan Beruldsen, a junior from Greenwood Village, Colo.
Michael Licatino, a 2006 Hendrix graduate and current assistant director of admission, is also participating in the program.
Heilongjiang University is located in Harbin, China, an area of China where the most standard form of Mandarin is spoken. It is an ideal place to learn Mandarin Chinese.
The ACS-Heilongjiang University Summer Chinese Language and Culture Institute began June 6, and will conclude on July 29.
The program offers three levels of language instruction (e.g. beginning, intermediate, and advanced) as well as a culture course taught by Dr. Jay McDaniel, professor of religious studies at Hendrix. The culture course provides an introduction to modern life in China, using Harbin, China, as a case study. The course consists of readings on life in post-Mao China; an introduction to the history of Harbin; an introduction to Chinese arts as appropriated in contemporary settings; afternoon excursions to supplement class time; and interviews with Chinese from different walks of life in Harbin – schoolteachers, farmers, clerks, professors, government officials – followed by structured classroom discussions.
Students in the program receive three Hendrix College course credits, the equivalent of 12 semester hours, which, for non-Hendrix students, will transfer to fellow ACS institutions.
American and Chinese students at Hendrix have developed a website of cultural information, which includes pictures and text about the ACS-Heilongjiang University Summer Chinese Language and Culture Institute. To view the site, visit http://www.hendrixchinaconnection.org/the-harbin-odyssey.
