Vrazel's recovers in good form on Mississippi Gulf Coast
There are lots of casual places, particularly seafood houses. And while the casinos have largely taken over the upscale end of the market, a few classy independent restaurants survive. The best of them is Vrazel’s. If you didn’t know better, or didn’t look at the photos of the devastation framed just inside the front door, you would think nothing had happened. Vrazel’s is as delicious and busy as ever.
Why it’s essential Vrazel’s is a classy-looking restaurant with a menu and service style reminiscent of major New Orleans restaurants of the 1980s. That was a very good time for such restaurants, and what you find here actually may make you nostalgic. The food is decidedly Creole with an emphasis on the local seafood.
But this is not New Orleans, and people here eat a bit differently.
Why it’s good Bill Vrazel, after some years at the Diamondhead club restaurant, opened his own restaurant in 1985. He took over the long-running Angelo’s, which was most famous for having a large live oak tree growing through the dining room’s ceiling.
Hurricane Katrina ripped the front off Vrazel’s, but it was on ground high enough that it didn’t suffer the storm The main dining room has a wall of windows with a view of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the Island View Casino complex. The windows are stepped so that every window table is sort of in a corner — a brilliant design.
The lighting is low and the sound level is soft. The servers are less formal than they at first seem, but they know the menu well.
