State boys golf: Washington leads 3-A by three strokes

Decorah junior Nick Nelson owns a two-shot lead over Pella junior Lucas Boyd for medalist honors after an opening 71.

Class 2-A: Carroll Kuemper and Waterloo Columbus are once again battling for a state team championship.

Kuemper is seeking a third consecutive title and trails Columbus by one shot, 311-312, after the opening round at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore. Columbus appeared at state in 2009 and finished third behind Kuemper and PCM of Monroe last year.

Columbus senior Adam Squires improved 10 strokes from his first-round score of a year ago. Squires (72) leads Des Moines Christian sophomore Chris Sturdivant by one shot. Central Lee’s Brian Krehbiel shot 74.

Class 1-A: Mason City Newman, the 2009 state champion, leads the 1-A team race after the first day at Lake Panorama National Resort in Panora. Newman shot a 332 total to lead reigning state champion Algona Garrigan by five shots.

Lisbon senior Tyler Gunderson leads by three shots in the individual race after shooting a 72. Gunderson was fifth a year ago.
