Bigger Is Not Always Better When It Comes to Social Networking: A LinkedIn Survey

According to a report from LinkedIn , the professional social networking site, men have more connections than women, and in general represent a larger cross section of members for the site.

When analyzing which fields and careers men and women populated more, ironic numbers revealed that traditionally male companies such as tobacco manufacturers and ranching businesses had more female registered networkers whereas more male members dominated traditionally female arenas such as the cosmetics industry.

Analysts from LinkedIn suggest this odd outcome is because members of one sex who work in companies traditionally populated by members of the opposite sex have to work that much harder to make connections and gain respect from colleagues.

Without studying the quality of the connections per user, LinkedIn made the conclusion that, while men do possess overall larger numbers of connections than women, bigger isn’t always better. The “depth and breadth” of contacts is just as important as how many you have.

Offering some insight into how best to leverage connections on LinkedIn, advisors from the company suggest looking at the geography of your connections, making sure you include members from your past jobs as well as members of industries you hope to work for in the future.

More importantly, the networking experts state that you should be diligent about interacting and engaging with your network. A sleeping profile gets no action.
