Harpswell Inn offers relaxing atmosphere
A. Paul Curtis and Master Albion Estes built a Colonial-type structure as a boardinghouse for ship carpenters who worked building large wooden sailing vessels for the Curtis-Estes Shipyard located on Lookout Point. When the building of steel ships replaced the building of large wooden sailing ships, Mr. Curtis kept the Lookout Point House and engaged in the summer boarding business for several years, finally selling the farm and house to his nephews, Joseph and George Curtis. The little islands viewed from the front porch were named George and Joe. In 1928, Dr. Alfred Merriman of Bristol, R.I., bought the place and thoroughly remodeled it. The house was lighted throughout by electricity supplied by Central Maine Power. A well was drilled, giving an abundance of fine water which was pumped by electricity to the newly enlarged kitchen, several bathrooms and every bedroom in the house. In 2011, that same fine well still supplies an abundance of water and is still powered by CMP. Sue and Bill Menz bought the inn in 1991 and were the third owners to operate the Lookout Point House as a place of lodging. Although they changed the original name, from Lookout Point House to Harpswell Inn, one element has always remained the same for the past 250 years — the beautiful scenes of the Maine coast and the sparkling waters of Casco Bay. With Dick’s part-time job as president of the Harpswell Business Association, we try to promote “Buy Local” whenever possible. Besides offering our guests the association’s visitors map, we try to analyze the guests wants and needs, then direct them to the arts, theater, antiquing, state parks, boat trips, kayaking, craft shops. A. Our inn is a unique piece of Maine and Harpswell history dating back to wooden shipbuilding days and the beginning of tourism in Maine. There were 52 known lodging places on Harpswell Neck alone. Originally supported by the steamboat ferry services from Portland, the Woodlanding Road across from the inn was one of the seven steamboat landings in Harpswell. “The intent of the Harpswell Business Association is to represent, publicize and unify diverse types of commerce. This nonprofit corporation is a group of concerned community members organized for the purpose of business planning, support, promotion and development within the town of Harpswell, Maine.Bed And Breakfast In Maine - News

Ready Yet? Bringing Children to a Maine Bed and Breakfast | Maine ...
Since I am not a parent, I don’t know exactly how the thought process goes, but after countless conversations with guests, as well as those who decide their children aren’t ready, I feel as though I can make a decent guess. The number one deciding factor seems to be whether they can sleep through the night. If they can’t, parents just don’t subject others to their plight. The second most common thing I have observed is that the kids who visit a Maine Bed and Breakfast don’t tend to have screeching meltdowns. That’s not to say they don’t have meltdowns at all, but they just tend to be more tearful and subdued than anything else. I suppose the overall trend is that our pint-sized visitors are mature and well-behaved. Now I suppose that could be attributed to the parenting styles adopted by BnB goers or to the nature of the child – take your pick! (But I like to thank the parents!) The question I ask parents who are contemplating bringing children along is really the deciding factor: can they create their own fun and entertainment or do they need incredible amounts of external stimulation? If your biggest concern is where they closest miniature golf or amusement park lies, then your little ones likely aren’t ready (give ‘em a tad bit longer). Now, Kennebunkport Maine is known for its glorious beaches and great dining, so if the kids are fans then you should be in the clear. Families with children under 12 will enjoy breakfast delivered to their door or the back yard bistro sets. For child-less guests that means peace and serenity at the table (though probably not when Walter’s serving), and for families, that means no “inside voices” lectures or getting everyone out of jammies and set for the day. Speaking of breakfast, don’t let gourmet breakfast be a turn-off when traveling with kids – at our Maine Bed and Breakfast, we always stock kid-friendly cereals and are happy to deliver any available side dishes they might like (or like to try).
