Coffee With… Montclair Musician William Mallory

Mallory: It started as a concept album working off of a single idea. My first album, I Was Never Here, had a lot of drummers and real players, but for this album I wanted it to be more techno-involved. So just being a smoker, I had been throwing lighters underneath my couch, and after 20 or so lighters winding up there I came up with the idea of a dead lighter cemetery. I just played off that concept to make the album. I always want to put out a new record, but I need an idea to spark it first. Lyrically, the songs are based off of relationships I’ve had and kind of just overcoming one’s fears.

Baristanet: This is your fifth album; will you be performing songs from this album locally? Mallory: Yeah, I think I’m going to start playing out more to promote the album, most likely acoustically. I also just picked up a nice Rickenbacker so maybe I’ll put a small group together. I’ve played with a lot of people, so right now I’m kind of just checking out musicians, although I would like to start headlining shows eventually. The open-mic scene kind of gets old, even though it is a great way to play out and get your chops up. Mallory: Well I started music when I was ten. I wrote my first song on piano which was called, “Don’t Make me Die.” I was looking at a Times Magazine cover of the Jonestown Massacre where this guy got a thousand people to kill themselves. It really took me; it had all the dead bodies on the cover, so I wrote a song about it because it was my first real confrontation with death. Ever since then I’ve been in and out of bands. In 1987, I got onto Atlantic Records and recorded an album with them. My albums are now released through iTunes, which so far has worked out really well.

Baristanet: What genre would you say this album is and what makes it special? Mallory: I got into the music industry just by playing and being in bands. When I got signed to Atlantic, Elliot Easton who was, and still is, the guitarist for The Cars really liked the music we were playing. Our producer at the time, John Rollo, asked Easton to record with us on a project called Natasha’s Brother. He was blown away with what we were doing and he ended up hanging around for a year to help us with the project. He was great to work with and an incredible guitarist. The Cars actually got back together recently and released a new album, which I’m pretty excited about. So check that out if you get a chance.

How Do Windproof Lighters Work? | CigaretteGasLighter.com ...

Lighters are an essential tool for any smoker, regardless of what you smoke, be it a pipe, cigar or cigarettes. Almost all smokers have experienced the annoyance and frustration that comes with trying to light up on a windy day. Sometimes, all it takes is a slight breeze to snuff out a lighter. To combat this, many smokers have switched to using a windproof lighter. How do these devices work? Are they actually windproof?

As a matter of fact, these types of lighters actually are wind resistant. Most models are capable of withstanding even high winds. However, very high winds might still cause a problem; of course, if you’re outdoors during such an act, you’re likely in the middle of a hurricane! How do windproof lighters operate? What makes them proof against all but the strongest winds? Understanding how these lighters operate is not difficult.

Windproof lighters work on the principle that high pressure will beat wind almost every time. The fuel within these lighters is highly compressed and is released in a high-pressure stream. When the fuel meets oxygen (and a spark, of course), the result is a highly pressurized jet of flame. Traditional lighters do not provide this amount of pressure, thus they are easily put out by errant breezes. However, it takes a considerable amount of wind to put out a jet torch lighter.

You will find a wide range of different lighter styles and configurations available. Dual jet, triple jet and other styles exist. You will even find dual flame lighters that incorporate a high-pressure jet of flame with a traditional flame, which is usually mounted on the side. The traditional flame offers benefits to pipe and cigarette smokers when the conditions are not windy, while the jet torch ensures that even a cigar smoker can light up in windy conditions.

Locating the right lighter model for your needs is not horribly difficult, but you will need to know what’s available. You will find that numerous manufacturers offer lighters with wind resistant properties. However, you should compare several things about each lighter before making a choice. Items for consideration include the duration of the warranty, the availability of repairs or replacement parts and what other consumers thought about using that particular lighter. You can find the right lighter with minimal effort.
