Victoria Ayotte Brown: What does morality matter?

1 Sarah Taylor's letter "Character counts" of June 13 provoked a robust back-and-forth on JournalStar.com , with 163 comments on which politicians have character and how much it matters.

"There is nothing new about lack of character in U.S. politics; there is just more coverage about it. Read about the politics of the Tea Pot Dome scandal," Benevolus wrote.

QuestionAuthority said: "No one should expect their leaders to be saints, but our leaders should at least be cognizant of the public scrutiny in which they live. They should also be aware that when they mess up, they don't just hurt their political careers. They hurt all of the people that placed their vote and their faith in them."

2 George W. Bush to attend College World Series; 128 comments.

A brief on the former president throwing out the first pitch turned into a debate on his presidency.

"Oh, goody, Dubya out and about," hilltree opined. "This should be almost like his time in the White House except he can't personally ruin this event."

From Brocktoon: "At least we get to see a president who can actually throw a baseball like a man. Every time I see O try (to) throw out the first pitch, I cringe, although I usually cringe at the sight of him regardless of what he's doing."

3 Topless bar gets council approval to move downtown; 99 comments.

There definitelywere  mixed opinions on the Viper Lounge's bid to move downtown on O Street.

"Hurry everyone, get your 1950s morals out of storage and let's try as hard as we can to limit businesses we don't agree with," lincolnight commented. "I like how they say this is a ‘residential area' on O Street. Wow. They also don't mention this is on the back of the Grand, not the front where the kids hang out."

Joe Sixpack said: "Putting a topless bar in downtown Lincoln is a bad idea. Period. You can make all the juvenile and immature jokes about prudes and boobies you want, but the facts bear out that it will diminish the value of the surrounding area."

4 Dana Milbank: Bachmann into overdrive; 92 comments.

Michele Bachmann didn't get much love when commenters dissected the current GOP presidential field after last week's debate.

"Who is this person? Sarah Palin 2.0 without the hokey accent? … What makes her qualified to be the president? I could care less about her family. This isn't TLC with the Duggars, it's the United States of America," F0RG3DinCH0RN wrote.
