Of mainstream Hollywood cinema, shows off considerable comic timing as the titular educator whose singular goal in life is to land a rich husband. After a first-act twist she finds herself back in that most financially troubling vocation: teaching. Before any audience member can ask "how'd she get this job in the first place?" she's bringing the lulz with off-color jokes and inappropriate behavior.John Adams Middle School (JAMS! for short) is loaded with nothing but colorful characters, from Principal Snur to Miss Squirrel to the argyle sweater-wearing high-end watch manufacturer's heir played by Justin Timberlake. Writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky of The Office ) are very much in their comfort zone, getting the wacky out early and often. There are enough zings that it takes longer than usual to determine that some of the characters feel real (like Jason Segal's gym teacher and the loser kid who likes poetry), but others feel phony (Timberlake especially, as well as the parade of familair TV comedy faces) and not much of the film's motivation makes much sense.
Diaz realizes she'll only live her dream to nab Timberlake (or a guy like Timberlake - she's not that specific) if she can get herself a quality boob job. To put it in standardized testing form, silicone: Bad Teacher .
Surgery is expensive, which leads to a series of schemes, some of which include straight-up stealing, to reach this goal. There are a lot of clever moments, including a subplot involving roofie-ing Thomas Lennon, which can't help but underline a central paradox: why is she a crack mastermind in some scenes but a complete dunce in others?
These are questions that only come once the end titles have rolled. Mid-film it won't be an issue as, more than likely, you'll be laughing. I mean, Lucy Punch sits in a urinal for God's sake! How bad can a movie like this be?
Points go to the whole cast, Stupnitsky, Eisenberg and director Jake Kasdan for keeping the surprises coming.
