Parting gesture: Brothers build simple coffin for father
Although Harold Thompson has left this world, his children were able to fulfill one of his last wishes, by coincidence on Father’s Day weekend.
Thompson died June 10 at age 95, after a life of farming and fishing in Jerome County. Over last weekend, his family didn’t linger on the typically hard decisions about their father’s final arrangements. He wanted a simple pine coffin for his interment, and his son, Max Thompson, went to work building one on Monday.
The Jerome family’s decision to forgo buying a casket from a mortuary isn’t uncommon. Ken Triplett Jr., a professor of cabinetmaking and woodwork at the College of Southern Idaho, where Thompson’s coffin was built, said another student constructed one earlier this year for his brother.
“We were told by the mortuary that it’s been done before,” Thompson’s daughter, Sharon Lutz, said.
Max, a retired dentist, began taking woodworking classes at CSI two years ago, he said, and turned his education into a hobby. He, Lutz and brother Ren were putting the finishing touches on their father’s casket on Thursday morning. Another brother, Stevan, wasn’t there on Thursday.
The blue satin lining and pillow were complete earlier in the week. All that remained unfinished was a final stain and completion of a relief carving of a fisherman hauling in a trout.
Today, the family will lower their patriarch and his simple coffin into the ground at the Jerome Cemetery.
In addition to adding a personal touch to their final gift to their father, taking time to build the coffin has brought the family closure.
“It’s been good therapy for the family to be working on this,” Lutz said, “knowing it’s for dad, but keeping your mind off a lot of things.”
