Rapid prototype firm CRDM finds new application for additive layer manufacturing

CRDM, which claims to be the UK's longest standing provider of rapid prototyping and manufacturing, has initiated a project to introduce a new manufacturing method for electronic packages that will eventually enable the production of high performance electronics packages in 50% silicon aluminium alloy – something that could offer exceptional benefits to the high power switching/microwave electronics industries.

CRDM has been closely associated with the 'traditional' mechanical engineering market, using rapid manufacturing to produce mould tool dies, as well as metal products, while also offering a rapid moulding service. It also provides rapid prototyping services for physical products.

The organisation instigated this latest project to investigate how to remove heat from electronic devices, in order to avoid drops in efficiency. The global market for thermal management currently stands at a staggering £1 billion, so the improvement of cooling high power switching devices has the potential to lead to major energy savings.

CRDM collaborated with several leading organisations from the electronics industry to work on individual elements of the Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) technique.

The project, which was funded by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB), demonstrated that it is possible to selectively laser melt high silicon aluminium powders to produce artefacts.

Specific benefits have already been established for a number of individual markets ranging from aerospace through to avionics.

Designing Demand: The £25m success story of Sheffield's Gripple

With rapid prototyping, the design can be finished on Friday and a working model can be in the office by Monday. Thanks to this agility and responsiveness, Gripple is hitting that 20 percent target consistently. The advent of 3D printing could,

Benefits of Rapid Prototyping Machine | Credit Card Offers

Rapid prototyping machine was invented in the year 1980 and this machine was introduced in order to form 3d physical models. These models can be created in a lesser time and at a low cost. The word rapid is used in the sense that it creates the models in a very limited period for maximum advantage. The creation of 3d prototype models takes a lot of time if done through digital data or 3d. Rapid prototyping machine has been introduced to speed up this process effectively. With the help of third printers, the tools can be formed much faster and even the prototyping can be done within no time.

This very new technology is welcomed by everyone. Many manufacturers have pitched in to make this machine that is all set to take over the market. The printers installed in these prototyping machines work fast and are extremely versatile. Rapid prototyping machines are very helpful to engineers, animators and product designers to convert their imagination into reality in the form of a model within the limited period. It is not only quick in processing but the models can be made at a very low cost. This particular machine comes with a three dimensional printing system which leads to quick product development. The machine is in fact a blessing in disguise for manufacturers, engineers, animators or designers.
