Local Bands at the Arts Fest: Shaney McCoy

It’s four days of over-stimulation in the best way possible and since art enthusiasts know where to go to ignite their artistic palate, we thought we would give music lovers a taste of what’s to come at this year’s festival. We talked to three different local bands, each of which will be playing on a different day and a different stage. They are merely three examples of what you can hear at the fest but when it comes to their sound, there is nothing mere about them. — Autumn Thatcher Northern Utah native Shaney McCoy has been making music for as long as she can remember, and for every minute of it she has put an enormous focus on her lyrics. Her inspirations range from James Taylor to Carole King to Cat Stevens, and though she was very young when she was first introduced to these musicians, McCoy says that they inspired her before she even knew what was happening. On her lyrics • The lyrics really are key to me. I will agonize over a line for days, sometimes weeks or months, trying to find just the right word or phrase. I like almost all kinds of music, at least for a song or two, but the music that I always come back to is the music with great lyrics that move me and make me feel connected to some universal human emotion. The bottom line for me is that the beauty of my instrumentation and arrangements can be judged by the degree to which they support my lyrics. Her debut album • “Bridges I Can’t Burn” is a collection of 12 of my original songs recorded in nearly an entirely acoustic format by Mark Stephenson at MAS Productions in Clearfield. I’ve been told my a number of people that they really appreciate that there’s a lot of variety in the songs but they all fit together well as a part of the whole project. Some songs lean more towards alt-country, some towards blues or folk, but there is a continuity that flows through the album. The album has gotten a fair amount of airplay both nationally and internationally, which has been hugely rewarding. The live show experience • My shows are a great way to just chill and get lost in the music. Many of my shows, including the one at the festival, are solo — just me and my guitar. I typically play mostly original songs with a few well-loved covers thrown in. I usually start with a set list, but often the audience and I get into a kind of symbiosis and I end up playing whatever feels right.
