Jamal decries misuse of the Coat of Arms

Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Information, Baba Jamal has cautioned the general public to refrain from misusing various national emblems and symbols or face the law when caught.

“The misuse of national symbols such as the Coat of Arms especially by the general public who don’t have the mandate to use them is illegal and it’s punishable by law,” he said.

Briefing the media on his ministry’s two weeks nationwide tour in Accra, Baba Jamal appealed to the media to report any of such acts to the ministry for the necessary actions to be taken.

As the fourth estate of the realm, he said the media has a duty to be objective, circumspect and fair in its reportages.

“Be circumspect in your reportages and I assure you of government’s commitment and effective collaboration in executing the Better Ghana agenda,” he said.

The tour which started from the 1st to the 14th of June, 2011 was led by Baba Jamal, officials from the Information Services Department (ISD) and members from the media.

According to Baba Jamal, the tour began in Bolga in the Upper East Region and ended in the Greater Accra Region.

“During the tour, our team paid courtesy calls on the various regional ministers, met with all ISD staffs in the regions, MCEs and DCEs and interacted with them as well,” he said.

The deputy information minister said the main objective of the tour was to monitor how effective his government has been working and being managed on the ground by agencies that have been entrusted with such responsibilities.

“The tour was also to help foster and deepen working relation between the ISD and other agencies under the ministry and to prepare the ground for the official launch of a project code named, “Ghana Database Project” which is to collect complete information on all institutions across the country and to make them available to the public,” Baba Jamal said.

The Ghana Database Project aims at branding Ghana from inside and making information assessable to the public. It also intends to launch a national portal that will have full information on every major project in the country.

As part of the project, the information ministry has adopted regional slogans for the various regions in the country.

The Upper East adopted “The Light of the North”, the Upper West adopted “The Smile of the Xylophone” whiles the Brong-Ahafo and the Eastern Regions adopted “The Best of All’ and “The Best starts from the East” respectively.
