5 Things We'd Rather See David Lynch Do Then Open His 'Mulholland Drive' Club ...

You may have already heard the news: David Lynch is opening a nightclub in Paris . Yes, you read that correctly. The acclaimed director of “ The Elephant Man ” is to open an entertainment venue in one of Europe’s cultural capitals. To sweeten and/or poison the deal, depending on your outlook, it’s taking as its design premise Lynch’s 2001 masterwork “ Mulholland Drive ”  and the film’s own night club, Club Silencio. For those who haven’t seen the film in a while and need reminding, Club Silencio is the other-worldly mystical dive joint in which wide-eyed Hollywood starlet Betty Elms ( Naomi Watts ) finally leaves her self-declared comfortable “dream place” and awakens as the suicidal Diane Selwyn (also Naomi Watts) in a monstrous version of reality. This real-life iteration promises “a movie theater, concert hall, art gallery, restaurant and, of course, a bar” but there’s no word yet on whether the establishment will stick with the film’s continuity and have Rebakah del Rio doing the nightly floor-show where she collapses onstage in a death-trance, a whack-job in a blue powder wig who ominously mutters the club’s title and a mustachioed emcee called Cookie who also runs a hotel downtown. Whatever the case, all of this is pretty dispiriting news for those of us still waiting for Lynch to announce another film project.

There’s a pretty famous article that David Foster Wallace wrote about his set visit to “ Lost Highway ” that any Lynch fan worth his or her salt should be well acquainted with by now. Writing in 1997 before the release of the film that Lynch co-wrote with author Barry Gifford , Wallace noted, “However obsessed with fluxes in identity his movies are, Lynch has remained remarkably himself throughout his filmmaking career. You could probably argue it either way—that Lynch hasn’t compromised or sold out, or that he hasn’t grown all that much in twenty years of making movies—but the fact remains that Lynch has held fast to his own intensely personal vision and approach to filmmaking, and that he’s made significant sacrifices in order to do so.

Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston haven’t exactly been synonymous with what many might call “quality cinema,” particularly as of late, but that hasn’t stopped them from being successful box office draws. Sandler, for one, is what we call “critic-proof,” in that it doesn’t usually matter what the critics think of his movies, because there will always be a fanbase for them. Aniston hasn’t been so lucky, which is why it was probably smart to team up with Sandler for Just Go with It, a romantic comedy about a plastic surgeon (Sandler) who convinces his assistant (Aniston) to pretend to be his wife in order to cover up a lie he carelessly let slip while attempting to woo a sexy schoolteacher (Brooklyn Decker). Unfortunately, critics found the film cheap with its humor and largely ineffective at eliciting the reactions and emotions it tries so hard to pry from its audience. If you’re one of the Sandler faithful or a big fan of Jennifer Aniston, then by all means, have at it. Otherwise, you might want to just go with something else..

Top 5 is Bamboo. Two of the original Rivermaya band members founded this alternative rock band in 2002. They received 38 awards. They have done excellent compositions and made their fans go gaga. They could have gone to the number one spot but sadly, they disbanded this January 2011. I’m thinking that maybe you are thinking why they belong on 5th spot. Well, I feel that they were still Rivermaya.

Top 4 is Razorback (1990-2007) and Wolfgang (1992-2002 & 2007). These two Filipino OPM rock bands are like brothers coming from different mothers. Razorback influenced by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Juan Dela Cruz Band. Wolfgang is more like Metallica, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam and The Doors. They belonged to the same genre, did explosive performances and rocked our brains out.

This film is Lynch through and through, as we have come to appreciate him and his visions, but it does have a certain naïveté about it, and the sense of active experimentation is very strong; possibly, because of this, his best film to date.
