New York on a budget

During past visits, I just adjusted my expectations expenses. After all, I rationalized, you pay a premium for the privilege of being fair in New York.I plunk my credit card without even looking at a tab that would have caused outrage in Houston.

Now that I am a graduate student, I did not have the luxury not to look at my tab. I look closely, in fact. So when I spent a long weekend here earlier this month, I wanted to enjoy the authentic experience of New York and also avoid insolvency. It turns out that you can do both, with a little deliberation, and to discover some of the greatest jewels of the city while you're there.

Take Governors Island, a public park accessible by a ferry ride (and free!) Short just off the southern tip of Manhattan, where a combination of fortification of the army in the early 19th century and art exhibitions contemporary - with a surreal, bug on the topic of mini-golf (also free!) - give the place a lively, if dissonant, dynamic.

The island of 172 hectares is home to one of the largest concentrations of the trees in New York, outside of Central Park.Open to the public every weekend of the summer, it offers breathtaking views of lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty, but has not yet become a fixture on tourist itineraries.
