STRIPER DERBY: The annual Bob's Bait month-long striper derby has a new format this year, with a $1 pre-entry required. The biggest striper weighed in during June will take the $100 prize, plus all the entry fee money from everyone entered. Only fresh fish can be weighed in and no weighing in of fish the same day as entering derby. Current leader is a 5.11-pounder landed by Chris Aguilar, Bakersfield, from the aqueduct. Pot is currently $400.

LAKE ISABELLA: The crappie bite is fair to good, but not wide open. The fish are spread out and not in the usual spots as the lake level rockets up with the thaw. The catfish are excellent on shad and clams, at Rabbit Island and in most bays and coves. The trout are fair at the main or auxiliary dam or in the Wofford Heights area. Largemouth bass are also starting to kick into gear on Senkos and cranks, but like the crappie, they are scattered.

KERN RIVER: Flows are going up daily with the warm weather. On Wednesday this week the outflow was 4,500 cfs and the inflow was 5,100 cfs, making Isabella come up quickly. There is still a pretty decent bite in the upper river for fly and bait anglers, especially in the Johnsondale bridge and Brush Creek regions. Anglers who fish the river margins and quieter pools are still getting quite a few fish, including some quality fish over 2 pounds. There have also been weekly plants in most stretches, but only one section was planted this week.

AQUEDUCT NEAR TAFT: The striped bass bite remains very good with loads of three to five-pound fishing showing. The bite is mostly on sand worms and blood worms, but other baits and swimbaits are getting some fish. The catfish bite has really improved over the last week.

MILL CREEK PARK: The catfish bite has been fair on cut baits. John VanWinkle, Bakersfield, landed a 9-pound catfish on chicken liver. Few bass showing.

HART PARK LAKE: The bluegill bite is very good worms, crickets, wax worms and meal worms. Carp fair to good on dough baits. Some catfish and bass showing, too.

TRUXTUN LAKE: The bluegill and carp are mostly in shallow water with good action on both. Carp best on dough baits, and the bluegill best on crickets and wax worms. Bass action is fair.

RIVER WALK PARK: The bluegill bite very good on small worms, crickets, meal worms and wax worms. Some bass. More carp showing again on dough baits.

MING LAKE: The bluegill bite is improving daily this week with the heat and the bite is very good on worms, wax worms and crickets. Carp also improving on Powder Bait and other dough baits. The bass bite has been fair on plastics, nightcrawlers or reaction baits, mostly Senkos or spinnerbaits fished early and late in the day.
